Today, Austin State Hospital (ASH) serves about 295 patients on a daily basis with an average length of stay for all programs of 17 days and averages over 4000 admissions a year. The focus of treatment is generally stabilization of acute symptoms and return to the community for continued outpatient services.ASH serves a 38-county region of Texas, stretching from the Waco area down to Galveston on the Gulf Coast. Child/adolescent services are provided to an additional 31 counties in Central and East Texas.Admission to the hospital requires that a person be a danger to himself or others in the community due to a primary mental illness.
